Home Movie Effect

Anyone who has viewed online video has experienced the Home Movie Effect- and its the reason most videos fail to go viral.

Seeing someone you know on screen makes it engaging, regardless of the content. You will watch your friend’s antics for minutes on end, even if they are boring or stupid. The same content, to a stranger, will be painful to watch, and they will quickly click away.

It’s the difference between watching highlights of your niece’s dance recital, and watching highlights of a random dance recital.

Before you unleash your hysterical video on the world, assuming it will go viral in minutes, run it past a trusted confidant who doesn’t know anyone in the video. If they think it was worth watching, post away. If they give it a thumbs down, back to the drawing board.
